Walking Can Increase Longevity

On the Health Watch, now there’s, growing evidence that your gut microbiome, the bacteria and other organisms, organisms that live inside you can affect your weight. Your immune system, even your risk of disease and a new study, says that stress can be as bad for your gut as junk food.

Researchers found that mice who were exposed to stress had gut bacteria that resembled those of mice. There were fed a high-fat diet, so dr. Mallika Marshall is here, and it seems clear now that what you have what you eat affects you, but stress affects you as well.

That’s right and most of us get stressed out from time to time. A little bit some people get more stressed out than others, and we know that it can affect your mental health right. It increases your risk of anxiety and depression, but now we have additional evidence that it can take a toll on your physical health as well.

Now the effects were only seen in female mice, so there appears to be some sort of gender discrepancy, at least in mice, on how our guts respond to stress, so that’s, something we’ll have to look at more in humans.

All right: how about this walking your way to a longer life? A new study, looking at almost 140,000 older adults, found that less than two hours a week of walking may reduce the risk of death. Two and a half to five hours a week of walking, could reduce mortality by a whopping amount. Use an activity band for motivation. It works for me.

20 percent benefits were seen from all causes of death, but most notably from lung disease, heart disease and cancer. Now this isn’t jogging. This isn’t running. This is walking. This is plain old, walk at a decent clip.

Okay right, you can’t saunter, but it’s generally recommended that adults get anywhere from a hip 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise a week and only about half of American adults are actually getting that.

I think a lot of people find that daunting yeah, so based on these recommendations, it says: look if you can even get out and walk for up to two hours a week. You are doing something good for your health and people.

Some people call it the perfect exercise because it’s Free and you don’t need any equipment. It’s generally easy to do and people can do it at any age. So we’re really into it with, you know, the bracelet, so you and keep track.

Just get off the couch and do it.
